balanced chair – installation in hotel room
Here is another balanced chair installation in a hotel room. This chair is in Negative Stability which means that the smallest disruption will make it fall, moving away from its point of balance exponentially and never returning to that state of balance it is in. It is like balancing a needle on its tip (just a little more manageable…). There is immense focus involved to do this, it is like a meditation. Like all things in life, a great challenge and the suffering necessary to achieve the intended results of that challenge, yield great satisfaction and pleasure. This is the same: The hour-long quest in Caribbean heat and the mental focus required were rewarded with the calm this installation emits when viewed, by me or anyone else. Balance is important in life. Have some!
Utility Cart – Balance Installation
Another balance installation of an object in a hotel room. This time its a balanced utility cart on a coffee table. I quite like the idea of the workman’s cart in the fancy room, balancing the dirty and the clean (you pick which is which). I wonder if they’d be into making it a permanent art-piece in the room, hehe…
Mind Map

My mind is quite chaotic at times. It might be the pressure of the responsibilities I have taken on in the past years or it might simply be the fact that with age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes opinion and with opinion comes struggle. Either way it can get overwhelming up there between the ears and the fact that I sometimes feel that I can step away from it and watch my mind go crazy from an outsiders perspective only adds to the confusion. So on a recent trip to Maine I installed a painters tarp-like-deal on the wall of my hotel room and started balancing out my thoughts.

Lizard
A couple of days ago at the Four Seasons Maui I was asked to catch a lizard for a photo. This questions stirred up something deep. Back in Austria, when I was maybe eight years old, I went to a river with two friends and one of them caught a lizard, rammed a stick through its torso and put it on a little wooden raft to go down the river. It was incredibly cruel to me at the time but I got over it (or maybe not…). Now, 22 years later and thousands of miles detached, upon that question the event popped back into my mind and I felt horribly wrong even scaring a lizard. I couldn’t stop thinking about that lizard since and played with all kinds of drawings of lizards until this ended up on the wall of my hotel room at the Four Seasons Lanai… I should install a camera to get the expression on the maid’s face upon entering the room…
